Casters
The Q & A grab bag continues to grow and we continue to pump out answers to your questions. We hope you’ve found some benefit in our ongoing series of Expert Q & A sessions. Although we’ve addressed this in the past, we have been asked this question several times in recent weeks, let’s take a look below.
Question: How do I know which caster is right for my shelving unit?
Answer: In short, the answer depends on your needs and how you plan on using your shelving unit. For most home applications, you can get away with 3″ rubber casters. They are great for light-duty storage and have the smoothness and mobility you get out of the heavier duty wheels. These are great in a pantry and will allow you easily maneuver your shelving unit for access to deep-seated items. These are the most popular choice for storage units being used in a garage.
If you are toting heavier items such as tools and equipment, you should consider using our heavy duty polyurethane casters. They are 5″ in diameter and have a 1,200-pound weight capacity. These are typically used in commercial or warehouse applications. This would most likely be overboard for use in your home unless you plan on stacking your appliances on there. By the way, we do not recommend you do that.
The 5″ rubber casters are a nice upgrade if you need a little more than what the 3″ rubber casters offer. With an 800-pound weight capacity, these are ideal for most office storage and some light to moderate industrial storage situations. Again, most likely more than you need for your home but they get the job done and can handle the abuse of daily heavy usage.
