Holiday Storage Ideas: Tips for Storing Decorations with Wire Shelving and Wire Shelving Accessories
Now that the holidays have come to pass, it’s time to pack everything up for next year. So, if you’re in need of a few holiday storage ideas, then you’ve come to the right place.
Depending on your traditions, decorating for the holidays may be simple or quite involved. If you’re familiar with the favorite movie family, the Griswalds, they qualify for the quite involved scenario. All of those lights, decorations, and extension cords all have to go somewhere. But where?
With space being an issue, people often resort to wire shelving in their garage or basement. This is an excellent option! Keep reading below for tips and suggestions on storing holiday decorations using wire shelving and wire shelf accessories.
5 Tips for Storing your Decorations after the Holidays
1. Designate a Shelving Unit
If holiday decorating is a sure tradition in your household, you may want to consider a wire shelving unit in the garage, basement, etc. solely for holiday storage. Wire shelving is ideal for such because it is sturdy and requires little to no maintenance.
These wire shelves are perfect for stacking bins and boxes too. They come in all sizes, and you can always add and remove shelves as needed. You can even make them mobile.
2. Hang It Up
Consider bagging and hanging your storage to keep items fresh and untangled for next Christmas. For example, instead of stuffing wreaths in boxes or plastic tubs use garbage bags and either a coat rack or shelving hooks.
Large garment bags are also fantastic for storing wrapping paper or oddly shaped items that don’t stock well. You can always hang them off the shelves of your designated wire shelving unit or add a garment rod. A garment rack will also work well for such.
3. Wrap The Lights
One of the most dreaded tasks of decorating for the holidays is detangling the lights from last year. To prevent this type of torture, wrap string lights around a clothing hanger to keep them from getting tangled. Then, you can either box them on the hanger or hang them on the shelves or garment pole as mentioned in #2.
4. Label Everything
Label everything to avoid future headaches. If you have certain items you pack out before others, put those in a box and label it “unpack first,” that way you don’t have to search through multiple boxes and bins for what you need to get started next year.
Keep outdoor and indoor decorations separate and label accordingly. A good labeling system always makes storage more efficient! A simple sharpie marker will do the trick. Or you can invest in label tags for your wire shelves.
5. Make Gift Wrapping Mobile
Gift wrap is one of the hardest things to store neatly. It’s also something you can use more than once a year. So, we suggest getting a little creative with this one and putting together a mobile gift wrapping station.
Wire shelving is one of the few storage solutions that work well for gift wrap. You can fold tissue paper through the wire slots of the shelves, and you can install rods to keep spools of ribbon and wrapping paper in place and accessible. Add baskets for even more storage and organization.
Depending on the size, you can keep it in your closet and roll it out for birthdays and other wrapping occasions.
