We receive many phone calls and emails from customers who already have a wire shelving unit but would like to convert the stationary unit to mobile wire shelves. Their concern: the levelers are already installed on the poles.
You have 2 options. The easiest is to get a threaded wheel, unscrew the levelers, and simply replace with the wheels. This should work for light duty applications.
However, if you want to add stem type casters to your wire shelving, it is a bit more difficult to do but certainly not impossible. Keep reading to learn more.
Adding Stem Casters To An Existing Wire Shelving Unit
First thing is you will have to disassemble your shelving unit. If you need help with that check out our post on taking your wire shelves apart.
You will also need a vice or something similar. After you have disassembled your unit take your posts with the leveling feet. Unscrew the leveling foot slightly leaving enough for you get some bite with your vice. Once in the vice simply wiggle out the bushing. Wiggle straight up and down and side to side. Do not use excessive force. You do not want the bottom of the posts to flare. Once this is complete you simply take your stem casters and insert into the bottom of the post.
A quality wire shelf stem casters will have a stem friction ring which is designed to catch a groove in the bottom of the tube. If they do flare a little bit, it’s not the end of the world because the stem casters will still be able to do their job.
So now you have the knowledge to turn that stationary wire shelving mobile!
Step 1: Place leveling foot in a vice.
Step2: Wiggle leveling foot up and down/side to side.
Step3: Separate post and leveling feet.
