When using mobile wire shelving there are multiple options when choosing wheels. However, for the majority of our customers a simple set of all swivel casters is the perfect choice. 2 of 4 wheels with brakes make it easy to move and clean around. These work great for most of our clients. We do get requests for information in regards to rigid and stem caster differences. Hopefully this post helps.
Special applications require rigid caster kits. Actually, when we say rigid casters kits only 2 of the 4 wheels are “rigid”. The other 2 wheels are swivel. If you are traveling longer distances or straight lines the combination of 2 swivel and 2 rigid wheels will help. The rigid casters are designed to only go backwards and forwards. While the swivels can rotate 360 degrees. In addition to the 4 wheels you will also need a rigid tie bar. Tie bars are an accessory that goes from front to back . These are needed to ensure the rigid casters stay straight. If you are ordering separately you will need to order the tie bar. The tie bars are available in limited depths of 18”, 21” and 24”. Be sure that the tie bar size you order matches the depth of the shelving. However our rigid caster kits include everything you need, the 4 polyurethane stem wheels 2 swivel, 2 rigid as well as the tie bar. The rigid wheels and cut transport time when doing straight line distances. You can use rigid caster kits on both wire shelf trucks and utility carts.
Rigid wheels are available as stem casters only. The stem casters have a stem friction ring that catches a groove at the bottom of the wire shelf post creating a tight fit and precise control. Simply put, rigid caster kits upgrade will speed up transportation times for works in progress. Ledges and dividers will enhance safety and product segregation.
